- Notice is hereby given that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways (HDOT) propose a bridge repair project. This federally funded HDOT project is considered a federal action and undertaking, as defined by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended (2006).
- The proposed project is located along Nimitz Highway, Route 92, between River Street and Awa Street in Honolulu, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) includes the length and width of Nimitz Highway roadway right-of-way (ROW) that is approximately 1.1 acres which includes Nuuanu Stream Bridge (also known as Queens Bridge). Proposed work will be conducted within the ROW. Staging areas and material stockpiling for the project will be temporary and located within the State-owned ROW. Staging areas and stockpiling will be removed from the State-owned ROW at the end of each workday.
- The undertaking will include repair of delamination, cracks, and spalls along the concrete deck soffit (underside), concrete pier walls, concrete girders, and concrete abutments as well as the repair and prevention of all major undermining. Areas affected by efflorescence (salt deposits) or rust staining will be cleaned and dry brushed. Areas of undermining under the piers and abutments will be backfilled with gravel. The bridge will not be altered in appearance, and the proposed work will only be conducted on the existing bridge structure.
- Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA, Native Hawaiian Organizations and Native Hawaiian descendants with ancestral, lineal or cultural ties to, cultural and historical property knowledge of and/or concerns for, and cultural or religious attachment to the proposed project area are requested to contact HDOT. Other individuals and organizations with demonstrated legal, economic, or historic preservation interest in the undertaking are asked to contact HDOT and share information you may have on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the proposed APE. We welcome any information within 30 days of notice.
