Notice of Destruction of Special Education Records

Dear Parents/Guardians and Former Students:
In accordance with 34 C.F.R § 300.624, the federal regulation under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Hawai’i State Department of Education (Department) must inform parents when personally identifiable information collected, maintained, or used under this part is no longer needed to provide education services to the child.
This notification is to inform you of the Department’s intent to destroy the special education records for those students who graduated with a diploma or reached maximum age (age 22) before September 1, 2023. If you would like to request a hard copy of the records, please contact your respective district or complex area by using the phone list below. Records must be claimed by Monday, November 30, 2026. All unclaimed hard copies of records will be destroyed after November 30, 2026.
