NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
MAUI PLANNING COMMISSION
The Maui Planning Commission of the County of Maui hereby gives notice of a public hearing on April 28, 2026, commencing at 9:00 a.m., or as soon thereafter as is practicable either at the Planning Department Conference Room, Kalana Pakui Building, 250 South High Street, Wailuku, Maui, Hawai’i 96793 and also via a videoconferencing platform, on the following matter:
PUBLIC HEARINGS
1. THORNE ABBOTT on behalf of the MARY ANN ARINI TRUST requesting a Special Management Area Use Permit for the proposed reconstruction of a 2,351 square foot two-story, single-family home, that was destroyed by the August 8, 2023, Lahaina fire. 2. MUNEKIYO HIRAGA on behalf of WAILUKU HONGWANJI MISSION requesting a County Special Use Permit to demolish the existing Old Language School Building and adjoining Judo Dojo and construct a new 1,600-square-foot one-story multi-purpose building located at 1855 Mill Street B and 1826 E. Vineyard Street Wailuku, Maui, Hawai’i, Tax Map Keys (2) 3-4-018:006 and (2) 3-4-018:096 (CSUP 2024-00001) (W. Leauanae)

3. PILI DESIGN BUILD on behalf of the DAVID AND CATHERINE MEDINA TRUST, requesting a Special Management Area Use permit for the proposed reconstruction of a single-family residence that was destroyed in the August 8, 2023 Lahaina wildfire. The scope of work also includes repairs to an existing pool and deck, located at 355 Front Street, Lahaina, Island of Maui, TMK: (2) 4-6-003:011 (SM12024-00020) (L. Sanger)

The subject public hearing will be conducted in accordance with Hawai’i Revised Statute Chapter 91, the Maui County Code and Rules of the Maui Planning Commission. Information pertaining to the subject applications may be obtained from the Maui County Planning Department, 2200 Main Street, Suite 315, Wailuku, Maui or by email at planning@mauicounty.gov.
Petitions to intervene shall be in conformity with Section 12-201-20 of the Rules of Practice and Procedure for the Maui Planning Commission and shall be filed with the Commission and served upon the applicant no less than ten (10) days before the first public hearing date. Filing of all documents to the Commission is c/o the Maui Planning Department, 2200 Main Street, Suite 315, Wailuku, Maui, Hawai’i 96793. The deadline for the filing of a timely petition to intervene if the first public hearing date is on April 28, 2026, is April 15, 2026.
All testimony regarding the subject applications may be filed prior to the date of the hearing by providing 15 copies of said written testimony to the Department of Planning by mail at: Planning Department, 2200 Main Street, Suite 315, Wailuku, Hawai’i 96793 or online via the Dropbox links posted below each item above. Written testimony should be submitted two business days prior to the public hearing to ensure distribution to the commissioners; however, testimony submitted after such date will still be accepted by the Board until the closing of public testimony at the hearing. Further information will be provided on the posted meeting agenda.
