30-Day Public Notice: Request for Consultation for a New Ha’ena 0.2 MG Water Storage Tank Water Tank, Wainiha Valley, Hanalei District, Kaua’i

The Department of Water (DOW) is continuing consultation related to potential impacts on historic properties for a proposed new water storage tank and related infrastructure in the Ha’ena-Wainiha Area water system of the Hanalei District on the island of Kaua’i. The County of Kaua’i, Department of Water (DOW) is proposing a new 0.2 million gallon water storage tank that will increase storage capacity to meet the required domestic and fire flow storage capacity. The additional storage capacity generated from this project will support the development of actions proposed in the Ha’ena State Park Master Plan, residential units, including affordable housing, and businesses.

The area of potential effect (APE) is on a steep hillside above Wainiha Powerline Road in Wainiha Valley, beside an existing water tank and pump station located on TMK parcels (4) 5-8-002: 003 (por) and (4) 5-8-002: 007. No known historic properties have been identified on the slope or immediate area. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) requires federal agencies to evaluate the impact of projects on historic properties. Federal money has been received by the Hawai’i State Department of Health Safe Drinking Water Branch (DOH-SDWB) to upgrade the Ha’ena-Wainiha Area water system.

If you would like maps and more information and/or are interested in participating in the consultation, please contact Berna Senelly at bsenelly@oceanit.com no later than February 22.
