HONOLULU BOARD OF WATER SUPPLY, WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACT SECTION 106 – REQUEST FOR COMMENTS

PROJECT NAME: BARBERS POINT 215 WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

ISLAND: O’AHU MOKU: ‘EWA AHUPUA’A: HONOULIULI

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) is proposing the installation of approximately 550 linear feet of new water line and approximately 850 linear feet of new drain line in the Honouliuli area. An existing water line will be taken out of service, partially demolished, and removed. The purpose of the project is to replace the existing aging water line to Reservoirs 1, 2, and 3 at the Barbers Point 215 Reservoir site and to extend the existing drainage system from the Barbers Point 215 Reservoir site to the intermittent stream at Awanui Gulch along Old Farrington Highway. This work will improve water system reliability and drainage at the Barbers Point 215 Reservoir site. This work will require the use of heavy construction equipment to excavate trenches averaging 4 feet wide and 8 feet deep for the water and drain lines. All construction work will be within the BWS’s Barbers Point 215 Reservoir site and private property. (See attached map for locations.)

PROPOSED PROJECT AREA – APPROXIMATELY 2.5 ACRES

Street Names TMK Linear Feet

Old Farrington Highway (1) 9-1-015:005 (por.) approximately 65 linear feet (drainage discharge structure) on private property.

Old Farrington Highway (1) 9-1-015:011 (por.) approximately 550 linear feet (water lines) on BWS property at

Old Farrington Highway (1) 9-1-015:035 (por.) approximately 850 linear feet (drain line) on private property in the Old Farrington Highway right-of-way.

POTENTIAL HISTORIC RESOURCES:

The BWS parcel (TMK 9-1-015:011) is a fully modified site with reservoirs (tanks) and infrastructure. A 2018 archaeological field inspection noted past grading and clearing, and limited vegetation in the project area. No archaeological resources were found or expected.
