NOTICE OF THE SEPTEMBER 30th DEADLINE
FOR HOME EXEMPTION CLAIMS
AND OTHER REAL PROPERTY TAX RELIEF PROGRAMS
WITHIN THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU
NOTICE TO OWNER-OCCUPIED HOMEOWNERS WITHIN THE CITY AND COUNTY OF HONOLULU – Revised Ordinances of Honolulu (ROH) Section 8-10.3. The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Budget and Fiscal Services, Real Property Assessment Division (RPAD) would like to inform all homeowner-occupants who have yet to file their home exemption claim, to do so by the September 30th deadline. Once approved, it is not necessary to refile every year unless there is a change to the facts reported in the original claim.
The exemption amount to reduce their assessed value is $120,000 for those under the age of 65 and $160,000 for those aged 65 and over.
All homeowners who occupy their home as their principal residence are urged to apply for this exemption. Since the exemption amount increases as the claimant reaches the age of 65, the eldest approved applicant, by default, will be granted the exemption as the claimant. Other approved applicants will serve as back up claimants should the granted claimant be deemed no longer eligible for the exemption.
Property owners filing for this exemption and other tax relief exemption programs including totally disabled veterans, persons with sight and hearing impairments, persons with Hansen’s disease, and totally disabled persons may file their claim by the September 30, 2024 deadline to be in effect beginning in the tax year of July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026.
Homeowners may visit www.realpropertyhonolulu.com to download an application form (BFS-RPA-E-8-10.3) or submit their home exemption claim online. Additional tax relief programs and general real property tax information can also be found on this website.
