SECTION 106 OF THE NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACT OF 1966

AS AMENDED (2006)

INSTALLATION OF NATIONAL ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE
(NEVI) CHARGING STATION AT ALOHA TOWER, OAHU
HONOLULU AHUPUAA, HONOLULU, OAHU
FEDERAL-AID PROJECT NUMBER: NEV-092-1(033)
TAX MAP KEY: (1) 2-1-001:062

Notice is hereby given that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways (HDOT) propose to install electric vehicle chargers on its property located at 1 Aloha Tower Drive in Honolulu, Oahu Island. This federally funded HDOT project is considered a federal action and undertaking, as defined by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended (2006).

The 30-ft wide by 60-ft long project area of potential effect (APE) is located between the former Hawaiian Electric downtown substation and Aloha Tower Drive. The APE consists of an existing concrete slab, with two metal canopies, a narrow grass “island,” concrete curbs, and 6 asphalt parking stalls. No historic properties were identified upon visual inspection of the APE.

The project includes the installation of 4 concrete slabs on the grass “island” to support 4 electric chargers. Battery storage cabinets will be installed on a new concrete slab that will replace existing concrete pavers, one cabinet beneath each existing metal canopy. The electrical conduit connecting the charger and battery will be laid on the asphalt in front of the existing curb and covered with concrete. There will be no ground disturbance associated with this project.

Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA, Native Hawaiian Organizations and Native Hawaiian descendants with ancestral, lineal or cultural ties to, cultural and historical property knowledge of and/or concerns for, and cultural or religious attachment to the proposed project area are requested to contact HDOT. Other individuals and organizations with demonstrated legal, economic or historic preservation interest in the undertaking are asked to contact HDOT and share information you may have on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the proposed APE. We welcome any information within 10 days of notice.
