Public Notice County of Hawai’i Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission Do you know of a special property in Hawai’i County that should be permanently preserved? The County of Hawai’i Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Commission (PONC) is seeking suggestions from the public nominating lands that could possibly be preserved. The Preservation Funds are derived from 2% of Hawai’i County’s annual real property tax revenues. Our most recent Conservation Easement acquisition consists of 1,363 acres in Kaunamano, Ka’u, Hawai’i. The purchase will ensure the preservation of four miles of coastline that includes the ancient Alaloa footpath, also known as the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, and protects sites of exceptional cultural, historical, environmental, and natural significance. Properties might qualify for preservation because they offer opportunities for education, public access to beaches or mountains, cultural significance, natural resources, and outdoor recreation. Such nominations for preservation could be beaches, coastal areas, forests, places of natural beauty or involve the protection of natural resources such as watersheds for general benefits to the public. The 2022 Suggestion Forms must be received by Monday, January 31, 2022, at 4:30 p.m. by mail or email.
