AMENDED APPLICATION OF HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC COMPANY, INC.
FOR APPROVAL TO COMMIT FUNDS IN EXCESS OF $2,500,000 (EXCLUDING CUSTOMER CONTRIBUTION) FOR PROJECT ITEM PZ.005089, KULANIHAKOI SUBSTATION PROJECT, AND TO RECOVER COSTS THROUGH THE EXCEPTIONAL PROJECT RECOVERY MECHANISM

The STATE OF HAWAII PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION (“Commission”), pursuant to Hawaii Revised Statutes § 269-27.5, HEREBY GIVES NOTICE that it will hold a virtual public hearing relating to the amended Application of HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC COMPANY, INC. (“HECO”), filed on May 28, 2021 (“Amended Application”), requesting, among other things, a Commission determination that the proposed 46 kilovolt (“kV”) transmission lines shall be allowed to be constructed above and below the surface of the ground for the Kulanihakoi Substation Project. The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. All interested parties may attend the meeting as follows:

HECO is a public utility that provides electricity service to the island of Oahu, and the proposed Kulanihakoi Substation Project and associated 46 kV transmission lines will be located in the Ho`opili development east of Kualakai Parkway and north of East Kapolei II. HECO’s Amended Application requests Commission approval of the commitment of funds in excess of $2,500,000 (excluding customer contributions) for its Kulanihakoi Substation Project and for a Commission determination that the proposed 46 kV sub-transmission lines shall be allowed to be constructed above and below the surface of the ground. HECO’s Amended Application also requests Commission approval for recovery of costs through the Exceptional Project Recovery Mechanism.
The public hearing that will be held on October 26, 2021, is intended to allow interested persons to state their views on only the proposed 46 kV transmission lines. Some of the proposed 46 kV transmission lines associated with the Kulanihakoi Substation Project will be placed near or through the residential development of Ho`opili.
The foregoing is a brief summary of the requests made in HECO’s Amended Application. HECO’s Amended Application is available for public review through the Commission’s electronic Document Management System, which is accessible at http://dms.puc.hawaii.gov/dms/. Copies of the Amended Application are also available for review by contacting the Commission’s Honolulu Office [(808) 586-2020] or the Division of Consumer Advocacy [(808) 586-2800].
All interested persons are invited to attend the public hearing to state their views on the proposed 46 kV transmission lines. Statements may also be e-mailed to the Commission at Hawaii.PUC@hawaii.gov. All written statements should reference “Docket No. 2020-0182.” Any person may request an auxiliary aid or service or an accommodation due to a disability by contacting the Commission within 5 days of the public hearing date.
