The Hawai’i County Fire Chief announces the following vacancy: DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF (Exempt) $143,640 Annual Salary The Deputy Fire Chief shall be responsible for assisting the Fire Chief in performing firefighting and emergency services in order to save lives and property from fires and from emergencies arising on land, on the sea, and hazardous terrain. The Deputy Fire Chief shall assist the Fire Chief in training, equipping, maintaining, and supervising a force of firefighting and emergency services personnel. The Deputy Chief shall assist the Fire Chief in monitoring the construction and occupancy standards of buildings for the purposes of fire prevention and life safety. The Deputy Fire Chief shall assist the Fire Chief in providing educational programs related to fire prevention and life safety. The Deputy Fire Chief shall have such other powers, duties and functions as may be designated by the Fire Chief. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Shall be a citizen of the United States and resident of the State of Hawai’i for at least one year immediately preceding appointment. [Hawai’i Revised Statutes 78-1(b)] Shall possess a valid State of Hawai’i driver’s license, class 3, or any other valid comparable driver’s license at the time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver’s license at the time of hire.) DESIRED WORK EXPERIENCE: Five years training and experience in fire control, including at least three years in the capacity of Fire Captain or above. DESIRED EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Note: Professional or Management work experience may be applied towards the desired education requirement on a year for year basis. Professional or Management work experience in the Fire Service refers to work experience in the capacity of Fire Captain or above. Fire Service experience credited towards the desired education requirement is in addition to the three-year work experience in the capacity of Fire Captain or above.
